In this new segment, I’ll look at each USports team’s recruiting class and pick out my Top 5 talents and the impact they might have. A caveat though, I can only evaluate recruits that I have seen play or found tape on. A top quality prospect with no tape cannot make my list. This week I start with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.
Laurier Top 5
1. Jahvari Bennett, RB, 5’8”, 171 lbs, Mississauga, ON (Carleton transfer)
Its not very often that a team can add a 1000 yard rusher but that’s what Laurier is doing. The Carleton transfer is a fifth year and spent most of last year hurt but topped the thousand yard mark two years ago. He wont be eligible to play until the mid point of the season under transfer rules but should be a dynamic presence down the stretch and in to the playoffs.
2. Connor Carusello, QB, 6’4”, 200 lbs, Caledonia, ON (McKinnon Park)
Carusello is a big time QB prospect. He’s got great size and a huge arm. Can throw the deep ball accurately off his back foot while on the run. Could become the heir to Michael Knevel.
3. Tommy Bringi, DB, 6’0”, 195 lbs, London, ON (St. Andre Bessette)
A down hill safety who packs a punch. Has good hands but needs to break on the ball better. Uses his size to be an effective blitzer and solid in the running game.
4. Daniel Fitzgerald, LB, 6’2”, 210 lbs, London, ON (Catholic Central)
A run stuffing middle linebacker who fills gaps and gets players in the back field. He will have an instant impact on the Golden Hawks because he is a dynamic special teams player as a blocker and cover man. May not start this year but will not redshirt.
5. Kavantye Bailey, ATH, 6’0”, 190 lbs, Port Hope, ON (Trinity College)
A multi-faceted threat in high school, Bailey will be a slotback in college. He is elusive after the catch and can rack up YAC yards. May take a few years to fully reach his potential as a pass catcher and route runner.
